Vaishno Devi Katra Strike Concludes Following Administration’s Written Assurance; Ropeway Project Put on Hold

The week-long shutdown and strike in Katra over the Vaishno Devi Ropeway Project concluded late Tuesday night, following written assurances provided by the administration. The announcement was jointly made by Jammu’s Divisional Commissioner and representatives of the Sangharsh Samiti after prolonged discussions regarding the protests.

A two-and-a-half-hour meeting between the administration and the Sangharsh Samiti resulted in key resolutions. These included the unconditional release of all 18 detained committee members and the suspension of ropeway project construction until comprehensive discussions are held with stakeholders, including committee members, to evaluate the project’s potential impact on the Yatra route.

As part of the agreement, youth staging a hunger strike at the Katra bus stand ended their protest. Business establishments in Katra and along the Yatra route are set to resume operations on Wednesday morning, reinstating horse, pony, and palanquin services for devotees on the first day of the New Year. The resolution has brought relief to residents, business owners, and pilgrims alike. The week-long protest had severely affected local businesses and disrupted services for devotees visiting Mata Vaishno Devi during the busy holiday season. With the strike over, the resumption of horse, mule, and palanquin services will ease travel for pilgrims.

Ropeway Project Sparks Controversy

The Vaishno Devi Shrine Board’s proposed ropeway project has been a subject of significant debate. While the board claims that the project will facilitate easier access for elderly and disabled devotees, the Sangharsh Samiti strongly opposes it. They argue that the project poses a threat to the livelihoods of horse, mule, and palanquin operators and undermines the region’s traditional pilgrimage practices.
