Members of Parliament (MPs) across party lines gathered in the Lok Sabha today to cast their votes in a closely watched election to choose India’s next Vice President. The contest is between two seasoned candidates — Dr. Radhakrishnan, a respected academic-turned-politician, and Justice Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge with a strong reputation for integrity.
The Vice President of India, the second-highest constitutional office in the country, also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. The outcome of this election is expected to have a significant impact on the functioning of the Upper House, especially in the run-up to the next general elections.
Voting began at 10 a.m. and continued till 5 p.m. in Parliament House, with MPs lining up to exercise their vote through a secret ballot. The Election Commission oversaw the process, ensuring transparency and strict adherence to protocols.
Dr. Radhakrishnan, backed by the ruling coalition, is known for his decades of work in education policy and diplomacy. His supporters cite his experience and consensus-building skills as key strengths.
On the other hand, Sudershan Reddy, supported by several opposition parties, brings a strong legal background and is viewed as a non-partisan figure. His candidacy is being seen as an attempt to restore balance in the functioning of the Rajya Sabha. Today News
