A recent report from the Pakistani English-language newspaper, The Dawn, reveals that a significant percentage of beggars arrested in foreign countries are of Pakistani origin, accounting for up to 90% of such cases. The Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis discussed the issue of skilled and unskilled labour leaving Pakistan. During the discussion, Overseas Ministry Secretary Zulfikar Haider shared alarming statistics about beggars of Pakistani origin facing arrest in foreign nations.
Haider disclosed that a substantial 90% of beggars arrested in foreign countries were identified as Pakistani nationals, according to The Dawn’s report. This statistic raises questions about the reasons behind such high numbers.
The report reveals that many beggars exploit pilgrim visas to gain entry into countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq. Additionally, a notable number of pickpockets arrested at holy sites were also found to be of Pakistani origin. Japan has emerged as a new destination for such visitors.
Haider emphasised that Saudi Arabia now prefers skilled labour over untrained individuals, reflecting a shift in the labour market’s demand. Pakistan has historically been a significant source of skilled and unskilled labour for various countries.

The report mentions that Pakistan faces unemployment challenges, with as many as 50,000 engineers in the country reportedly unemployed. This highlights the need to address domestic employment opportunities.
Haider expressed optimism that Pakistan’s foreign remittances would increase when more professionals from the country ventured abroad for employment opportunities. Remittances are a significant source of income for Pakistan’s economy.
The report notes that millions of Pakistanis are residing in various countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, highlighting the extent of the Pakistani diaspora and their contributions to host countries.
