IRS Officer Rahul Navin Appointed Interim Director, ED

Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Rahul Navin has been appointed as the interim director of the Enforcement Directorate, a key probe agency, following the end of Sanjay Kumar Mishra’s tenure. Rahul Navin will assume this role until the appointment of a regular director or until further orders are issued.

The appointment of Rahul Navin as interim director marks a significant transition in leadership within the Enforcement Directorate. Sanjay Kumar Mishra, an IRS officer of the 1984 batch, concluded his tenure as director on September 15, 2023.

The official order issued states, “The President is pleased to order the cessation of tenure of Shri Sanjay Kumar Mishra, IRS(IT:1984) as Director of Enforcement in the Enforcement Directorate on 15.09.2023 and placing Shri Rahul Navin, IRS(IT: 1993), Special Director, Enforcement Directorate as in-charge Director, Enforcement Directorate till appointment of a regular Director or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

In addition to his responsibilities as interim director, Rahul Navin will also serve as the Chief Vigilance Officer of the Enforcement Directorate headquarters. This dual role underscores the importance of maintaining vigilance and integrity within the organisation.

Sanjay Kumar Mishra’s tenure as the director of the Enforcement Directorate was initially set for two years, concluding in November 2020. However, he received a one-year extension, which faced legal challenges. The Supreme Court, on July 27 of this year, allowed Mishra to continue as the director of the ED until September 15, citing national interest. Following this extension, Mishra retired after serving in his fifth year of bureaucracy.

Rahul Navin’s appointment as interim director of the Enforcement Directorate ensures the agency’s smooth functioning during this transitional phase. It also highlights the critical role played by the Enforcement Directorate in investigating and enforcing financial laws and regulations in India.
