The Indian Govt, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light for the procurement of 12 Su-30MKI fighter aircraft, also known as “Flankers,” for the Indian Air Force (IAF). This decision comes as a strategic move to address the depleting fighter strength of the IAF. The newly ordered aircraft will be manufactured in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and will incorporate a significant 60% indigenous content.
With the recent approval, India aims to bolster its air defence capabilities by adding 12 modern Su-30MKI fighters to the existing fleet of over 250 aircraft of the same type. These new aircraft will play a crucial role in replacing the 12 Su-30MKIs that were lost in accidents over the past years, ensuring that the IAF maintains its operational strength.

The Su-30MKI is renowned for its extraordinary manoeuvrability, allowing it to perform complex aerial manoeuvres at various speeds. Among its impressive manoeuvres is the iconic “vertical Charlie,” which demonstrates its agility and combat effectiveness.
Considered a 4.5 generation aircraft, the Su-30MKI incorporates advanced avionics, radar systems, and electronic warfare capabilities, making it well-suited for modern aerial combat scenarios.
These aircraft are equipped with air-to-air refuelling capabilities, extending their range and endurance. This capability enables them to conduct long-range patrol missions and remain airborne for extended durations.
The decision to have HAL manufacture the Su-30MKI fighters in India with a substantial indigenous content of 60% aligns with the country’s “Make in India” initiative. It not only boosts the domestic aerospace industry but also reduces reliance on foreign imports for military hardware.
