KOLKATA: In a significant economic development, Tempe Grupo Inditex (commonly known as Zara), a major textile player based in Spain, is poised to start production in West Bengal, India, before the Christmas season of 2023. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced this promising venture during her ongoing official tour in Spain. The state government has pledged substantial support, including 100 acres of concessional land, to facilitate this collaboration with private entities.
Tempe Grupo Inditex, a prominent name in the global textile industry, is actively expanding its operations by partnering with private entities in West Bengal. The company aims to shift its manufacturing operations to the region, marking a significant milestone in the state’s industrial landscape. Production is expected to commence by the end of 2023, just in time for the holiday season.
During her visit to Spain, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a crucial meeting with the company’s officials to discuss the details of this partnership. The state government’s proactive role in providing land and support underscores its commitment to fostering industrial growth and sustainability.
Banerjee expressed optimism that this venture would not only contribute to the economic growth of West Bengal but also ensure long-term sustainability and prosperity for the region.
This initiative aligns with the collective vision set during the Bengal Global Business Summit in 2019, particularly in the “Downstream Polymer and Plastic Industry” segment.
In addition to this economic milestone, an important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Publishers & Booksellers Guild, the organiser of the International Kolkata Book Fair, and the Madrid Book Fair. This MoU focuses on the promotion and marketing of books, fostering institutional relationships, and creating broader platforms for book publishers on both sides. Representatives from the guild are accompanying Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during her visit to Spain.
The impending commencement of production by Tempe Grupo Inditex in West Bengal reflects the state’s attractiveness as an investment destination and its commitment to fostering economic growth and industrial development. This collaboration not only signifies the expansion of a global textile giant but also holds the promise of generating employment and contributing to the region’s economic prosperity. Additionally, the literary collaboration between Indian and Spanish book fairs highlights the cultural and intellectual exchange between the two nations.
