Chinese Zoo Denies Bears Are ‘Humans in Disguise’ After Viral Photos, Videos Spark Speculations

A Chinese Zoo has been embroiled in controversy after viral photos and videos raised suspicions that its bears were actually humans dressed in costumes. The images showed a bear at Hangzhou Zoo standing on its hind legs in a human-like stance, with pant-like folds on its rear, leading some netizens to question whether the zoo was using “humans in disguise.” In response, the zoo has vehemently denied the allegations, stating that their bears are genuine Malaysian sun bears and that the behavior is not uncommon for this species.

Viral Content Raises Speculations: Photos and videos of a bear standing on its hind legs in a human-like stance at Hangzhou Zoo went viral on social media. The images sparked speculations among netizens, with some suggesting that the zoo may be using “humans in disguise” to entertain visitors.

Zoo Denies Allegations: Hangzhou Zoo has refuted the allegations and asserted that their bears are authentic Malaysian sun bears. In a social media post, the zoo spoke in the voice of the bear, saying, “Some people think I stand like a person. It seems you don’t understand me very well.”

Zoo Attributes Behavior to Bear’s Temperament: The zoo explained that sun bears, being the smallest species of bear, have a mild temperament, making it not unusual for them to stand up to interact with visitors. This behaviour is a natural part of their social interaction and should not be mistaken for humans in disguise.

Temperature as Evidence: The zoo defended its claim further by pointing out that the day of the recording had extremely hot temperatures, reaching about 104°F. According to the zoo, a person wearing a realistic bear suit would not be able to withstand such heat, further supporting the authenticity of the bears.

History of Zoos Using Deceptive Tactics: China has had a history of controversies involving zoos attempting to deceive visitors with fake animals or humans dressed as animals. In 2019, Yancheng Wild Animal World in Changzhou faced backlash after two zoo workers dressed in gorilla costumes and performed in the enclosure. Similarly, in 2013, a zoo in Louhe tried to pass off a dog as a lion, and a leopard enclosure contained a white fox.

Despite the zoo’s denial and explanation, some netizens remain sceptical, prompting the zoo to arrange visits for reporters to see the bears for themselves. The viral photos and videos have shed light on the need for transparency and ethical practices in zoos, especially in cases where the boundaries between entertainment and deception are blurred.
