In July 2024, the Poonch district administration in Jammu and Kashmir launched an exciting river rafting initiative on the Pulast River, aiming to boost tourism and provide new adventure opportunities in the border area. The rafting event commenced on July 17 and ran until July 22, drawing both locals and visitors to experience the thrill of navigating the river’s rapids.
The event was inaugurated by Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Sandesh Kumar Sharma, who flagged off the rafting expedition from Kankote. He expressed hope that such adventurous activities would continue, especially with the Budha Amarnath Yatra attracting large numbers of visitors to the region. Sharma emphasized that these initiatives would not only promote tourism but also enhance local incomes .
Local residents, like Maqsood Hussain Shah, expressed their gratitude, noting that they had previously only seen such activities on television. The opportunity to participate in river rafting brought immense joy to the community .
The rafting initiative was organized in collaboration with GoWild Adventures, the Poonch Development Authority, and the district administration. Supported by the White Water Rafting Federation of Jammu and Kashmir, the event aimed to position Poonch as a premier destination for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts .
