Nipah Virus Outbreak in Kerala; Key Updates, Measures

KOZHIKODE: Nipah virus since 2018, causing significant concern and prompt response measures. Here are the latest updates on the Nipah virus outbreak.

In response to the Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala’s Kozhikode district, authorities have established containment zones in nine panchayats. These zones cover a five-kilometre radius around the residences of two individuals who succumbed to Nipah infection.

Two deaths and five additional Nipah virus cases have been reported in the state. Efforts are underway to identify and monitor high-risk contacts of the infected individuals. Nipah virus is known to cause respiratory distress and encephalitis, with a high mortality rate.

The state sent 11 more samples to Pune’s National Institute of Virology for testing, with results confirming no Nipah virus presence. Additionally, samples from 15 people on the high-risk contact list have been sent for testing.

A five-member team of experts from the National Centre for Disease Control, RML Hospital, and NIMHANS has been stationed in Kerala to assess the situation and support the state government in managing the Nipah infection.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has supplied monoclonal antibodies to Kerala to combat the Nipah virus. While this antiviral treatment is currently the only available option, its clinical effectiveness has not been definitively proven.

Kerala health minister Veena George has discussed the stability of the antiviral treatment with a central expert committee. Additionally, a mobile BSL-3 (Biosafety Level-3) laboratory has been deployed to test virus samples in the district.

The Kerala government has decided to collect body-fluid samples from individuals on the ‘high-risk’ contact list connected to the first Nipah virus victim. This measure aims to assess and monitor potential infections.

As a precautionary measure, the Rajasthan government has instructed medical officials to remain vigilant due to reported Nipah cases in Kerala.

The Nipah virus is a significant public health concern as there is currently no vaccine available for it, and it has a high fatality rate. The state of Kerala and health authorities are actively working to contain the outbreak and mitigate its impact on the population.
