India Gears Up for Deep-Sea Exploration with ‘Samudrayaan’ Submersible

NEW DELHI: India is embarking on a pioneering mission to develop its first manned submersible, known as ‘Samudrayaan,’ with the goal of exploring the mysteries of the deep sea and conducting an extensive biodiversity assessment. Following recent successes in space exploration, including the Chandrayaan lunar mission and the Aditya L1 solar mission, India is expanding its ambitions to include deep-sea exploration and scientific research.

India is developing its first manned submersible, ‘Samudrayaan,’ as part of a groundbreaking mission to explore the deep sea. This initiative follows India’s achievements in space exploration and reflects the country’s growing ambitions in scientific exploration.

‘Samudrayaan’ will enable a team of three explorers to reach a depth of six kilometres (approximately four miles) beneath the ocean’s surface. The mission aims to study deep-sea resources and conduct biodiversity assessments.

The project’s planning emphasises responsible scientific exploration to avoid disturbing the ocean ecosystem. India is committed to conducting deep-sea research in an environmentally responsible manner.

India anticipates completing the ‘Samudrayaan’ submersible project by 2026. The design of the vessel is expected to be similar to Oceangate’s Titan, a submersible known for exploring deep-sea environments.

The deep-sea exploration sector has seen notable achievements and challenges worldwide. India’s entry into this field reflects its vision for advancing scientific knowledge and exploration in uncharted frontiers.
