A fashion show held in Gulmarg during the holy month of Ramzan has sparked outrage among Kashmiri leaders and locals. The event, organized by the designer label Shivan and Naresh on March 7 as part of the Ski and Apres Ski 2025 festival, featured models showcasing outfits with artistic prints against the snowy backdrop of Gulmarg. However, the show has been widely criticized for disrespecting local religious sentiments.
After pictures of the event went viral on social media, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took swift action, demanding a detailed report from officials within 24 hours. The Chief Minister’s Office released a statement acknowledging the public outcry and stating that the event had hurt the sentiments of the people.
Various political and religious leaders voiced their discontent. Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq called the event “disgusting” on social media, emphasizing that Kashmir is known for its sanctity and such incidents cannot be tolerated. He urged strict action against the organizers.
Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Agha Ruhullah condemned the event, describing it as a “cultural invasion in the guise of tourism.” He called on the tourism department to intervene immediately. Similarly, People’s Conference president Sajad Lone expressed that hosting such an event during Ramzan was inappropriate.
Authorities have now launched an investigation into the incident, and a report is expected soon. The controversy highlights the delicate balance between tourism and cultural sensitivity in the region.
