L&T Secures Contract to Build Underground Section of Kolkata ‘s Metro Line 3

Indian construction giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won a significant contract to design and build part of Kolkata ‘s new Line 3 in the city’s metro system. Line 3, also known as the Purple Line, is a major metro expansion project that will run for 15km from Joka in the southern part of the city to Esplanade in the north. The contract was awarded to L&T by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a state-owned rail delivery body responsible for infrastructure development in India’s rail sector. L&T’s scope of work includes the construction of a 5km underground section of Line 3 from Mominpur to Esplanade, as well as five stations at strategic locations including Esplanade, Park Street, Victoria, and Khidderpore.

To create the underground tunnels, L&T plans to use both boring machines and cut-and-cover methods. This approach will allow them to efficiently construct the metro line while minimizing disruption to the surrounding areas. The project will also involve track works and architectural finishes to ensure the metro stations are functional and aesthetically appealing. The exact value of the contract has not been disclosed by L&T, but it has been classified as “large” by the company. According to L&T’s definition, a “large” contract falls within the range of $303 million to $605 million. This indicates the scale and significance of the Line 3 project for the city’s transportation infrastructure.

The metro project is a crucial development for Kolkata, one of India’s major metropolitan areas, as it will significantly improve public transportation and connectivity for commuters. The expansion of Line 3 will serve as a vital link between the southern and northern parts of the city, easing traffic congestion and reducing travel time for thousands of passengers.

Notably, a 6.5km stretch of Line 3 from Joka to Taratala has already commenced operations, making it the first operational section of the Purple Line. The completion of the 5km underground section from Mominpur to Esplanade and the associated stations will further enhance the efficiency and reach of Kolkata’s metro system.

L&T’s involvement in the construction of Line 3 highlights its expertise and capabilities in executing large-scale infrastructure projects. The company’s successful track record in the construction and engineering sector positions it as a key player in the development of India’s transportation and urban infrastructure.
